You hike up a jeep road among coastal oaks into open skies. You find the very definition of rolling hills to your left, and more, grander sights appear at each stage along the way. Further along, you can see up to eight of the nine morros in clear weather. Photographers — casual and serious alike — will find plenty of landscape to work with. Returning towards sunset, shadows grow along the hills to accentuate the landscape’s graceful curves.
What to expect
Miossi Open Space is close enough to town for a convenient hike, but far enough to feel removed from troubles. The landscape unfolds as you unwind.
The route at Miossi Open Space has several sections, including a steep, wide, unpaved dirt road and a a single-lane track through dense scrub. The latter includes a hillside path and switchbacks through waist-high grasses. The first overlook provides views of most morros, weather permitting, and a final steep ascent takes us to a wider panoramic view.

The route
I rate this route “moderate” and adapt the pace according to guests’ wants. I’ve timed an itinerary that reaches two scenic overlooks and back safely around dusk.

- Boots are recommended, especially if you need ankle support, but sturdy shoes with good tread will work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there shade?
Shade is limited to the start of the hike. You can expect heat in the summer, wind and precipitation in spring, and chilly air in winter.
Are there restrooms?
There are no facilities at the trailhead or along the way. Plan accordingly.
Can beginners do this?
Yes. This is a great experience for people of reasonable fitness who want to try hiking. It’s close enough to town to make travel easy, yet rugged enough to give a sense of the outdoors. No special equipment is required, including overnight backpacks or ankle-high boots.
Can children do it?
Children eight years and older, of reasonable physical fitness, can do this hike under supervision. Parents are responsible for their children’s safety.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs are permitted on leash. City ordinances require leashes to protect wildlife and dogs alike. Ticks are common off trails, and poison oak is present but not prevalent, so be prepared to clean/wash your pet before petting them after a hike.
Is there poison oak on the trail?
Poison oak is present along parts of the trail — not *on* the trail itself. The leaves are easy to identify compared to other vegetation on this well-maintained city trail.
Are there rattlesnakes?
Miossi Open Space is *likely* home to rattlesnakes. However, we’ve never seen one on or around the trails. We’ll take reasonable steps to avoid dangerous wildlife.
Is parking free?
Yes, parking is free at the south end of Old Stagecoach Road.
Is sunset always the goal?
By default the treks are scheduled to make the most of golden hour light. However, we can plan for other times that fit your schedule.
Can we stay after sunset?
Officially this preserve operates from dawn ’til dusk. However, as long as we’re heading towards the exit after sunset, we’re ok.
Do we need flashlights?
Flashlights and headlamps are not required for golden-hour treks. If your specific itinerary keeps us out after dark, we’ll discuss specifics.
